"Vocal Group of the Year"! | |
|
The YouTube Web site now makes it possible for Four Freshmen fans to see the original members of the group perform again, as well as other early configurations. Fans have been using YouTube to make available rare video clips of the original Four Freshmen -- Ross and Don Barbour, Bob Flanigan, and Hal Kratzsch. One has them singing "Old Rocking Chair." It features a vocal solo by Don, who left the group in 1960 and died soon thereafter in a car accident, and a trumpet solo by Hal. Hal was with the Freshmen from 1948-1953. This appears to be a movie "short," from a time when it was common to include short films (cartoons, musical numbers, travelogues, nature features, etc.) between showings of the main feature(s). Another is from 1952 and also features a Hal Kratzsch solo and trumpet playing. You can see "That's My Desire" by clicking on the song title. For fans of "Group 3" featuring three of the original members plus Ken Albers, there's also "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and a wild "Crazy Bones." ("You Stepped Out of a Dream" is mislabeled "You're So Far Above Me.") Let us know if you find any other videos online that we can add to the above list, as well as any additional information you have to share about those listed here.
