The Inaugural Class of MASHoF...

6/24/2009

It was an evening of lively debate!

We are pleased to announce the inaugural class of the Madison Area Soccer Hall of Fame. In alphabetical order...

Jose Asturias (Player & Builder) was a goalkeeper for the Madison Soccer Club in the early 60's and later founded the Monona Internationals who played in the Capitol Division for many years. Jose has dedicated the last three decades of his soccer career to coaching at the club and high school level.

Keith Binns (Player & Builder) placed an ad in the newspaper looking for local soccer players interested in forming a soccer team. It was May 1956 and you couldn't buy a soccer ball in town at that time. Through the years Keith was a founding member of the Madison Soccer Club, Madison United Soccer Club, Madison Area Youth Soccer Association & Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association. He also formed the first women's soccer team in Madison at Memorial High School.

Peter Bostanescu, (Player & Builder) another founding member of the Madison Soccer Club who helped to establish the first soccer field in Madison at Franklin Field. He later served as the Games Commissioner of the Capitol Region of the Wisconsin Soccer Association. Peter is now retired and living in Florida.

Klaus Feller, (Player & Builder) played for the Madison Soccer Club from the late 50's to the mid 70's. Along the way, he was a founding member of the Madison Area Youth Soccer Association, served on their Board into the 80's and served as Games Commissioner for the Wisconsin Soccer Association. In 1981, then Govenor Lee Dreyfus awarded Klaus a "Special Recommendation" for his work with youth soccer. Unfortunately for the local soccer community, Klaus has passed away.

Jim Launder (Coach) is probably best known for taking the UW Badgers to and winning the NCAA Championship in 1995 which was followed by a National Coach of the Year award the same year. During his soccer career, Jim has worked with the Columbus Crew, Milwaukee Rampage, Chicago Cobras, Chicago Sockers & the University of Dayton. He currently coaches the NPSL 56ers and works for the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association.

Grey Perrett (Builder) was an early Madison Soccer Club goalkeeper who's playing career was cut short by injury. He turned to coaching and formed the Amira Soccer Club who played in the State Major League. He later served as the Commissioner for the Capitol Region of the Wisconsin Soccer Association. Grey passed away in 2008.

Bill Reddan (Player & Coach) is another founding member of the Madison Soccer Club. He was also the head coach of the UW Men's soccer team that joined the Big Ten in 1991. Bill is one of the most respected men in soccer. His nominee wrote this of Bill... "There are countless people in the Madison soccer community who have been influenced by his personality and passion for this game".

Alma Taeuber (Builder) passed away on March 3rd, 2009 but she left a huge lasting legacy. She was the founder of the Regent Soccer Club in 1972, currently the 2nd largest club in MAYSA. Alma ran Regent for 20 years and was also on the Board of MAYSA. The soccer field at Vilas Park is named after her... a fitting tribute.

There you are. The eight inductee's for the inaugural class of the Madison Area Soccer Hall of Fame.

The Board will be meeting again very soon to discuss and finalize how the plaques for each individual will look (they will be on display at Reddan Park under the eaves of the building), and outline the details of the celebration that will be organized to recognize these outstanding individuals. We trust that the Madison soccer community we join us in this event.
