Ken Burghy

Ken started out as a "student of the game" in 1973 when his step-son began playing at age seven. "I just started hanging around the practices and helping out." After having played a little intramural soccer while at UW-Madison, his appreciation for the game grew as he became more and more involved in coaching young players, playing on various teams both indoor and outdoor, watching UW matches, and learning. After having coached several youth teams, he became the Junior Varsity coach at Middleton High School in 1983. He served both the boys and girls programs in that capacity for one year and took over as Head Coach for both in 1984. In his combined tenure as boys and girls coach, Ken has coached nearly 1000 High School matches and will be entering his 45th season as a Varsity Coach this coming spring. In these years he has never experienced a losing season and Middleton teams have compiled a combined record of 651-232-76. He is the only Wisconsin High School Coach to have won State Championships with both boys (2004) and girls (2006) while at the same high school.

Ken has acquired a USSF "B" license and a NSCAA "National Advanced Certificate", but he attributes his success to his high school football coach, Otto Breitenbach, and soccer mentors Stuart Daily, Ron Holzheuter, Jim Launder, and Ian Barker, "among others too numerous to mention".

" I've also obviously been blessed with some pretty talented kids," he states. Ken has been Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association "Coach of the Year" in 2000 and 2002, as well as NSCAA Midwest Region COY in 2002. "As my old friend Jim Kuelbs (former Madison West Coach) used to say, 'Good players make coaches look good'. I've been extremely fortunate."

Ken is a 1974 graduate of UW-Madison and is in his 35th year of teaching, all with the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.

Robert Newberry

Bob played Goalkeeper in the Capital Division for 10 years with the Madison Chargers from 1969 to 1979. Once done playing Bob coached youth soccer and began refereeing local games. In 1980 he became a USSF registered referee and as a State Level Referee he served for twenty years, until 2000. He has continued to serve as a Emeritus Referee up to the present. Bob served as a Referee Assessor from 1995 to 2003 and became a State Referee Assessor in 2001, which he still performs. In addition, he assumed the responsibility of being a Referee Instructor in 2000, which he also continues to perform. Bob has been instrumental in the growth and development of referee ranks in Wisconsin with over 20 years of service in the administration, training and assessment of Wisconsin's game officials.
