We are but hours away from closing the nominations for the inaugural class of the Madison Area Soccer Hall of Fame. We now have 12 nominations for the inaugural class of the Hall of Fame. These are quality nominations and include; The Burcalow's (Larry & Karen): the founders of Yahara Soccer Club (now part of MYSC). Klaus Bodenstein: an original 56er & coach of youth soccer for many years. Keith Binns: founder of both 56ers and Madison United. Founding member of MAYSA & Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association. Bill Reddan: one of the original 56ers and later coach of the UW men's soccer program for many years. Reddan Park in Verona in named after him. Klaus Feller: played for Madison 56ers in 60's & 70's. Also a founding member of MAYSA. Last week I received a very comprehensive nomination for Mike Bell, former high school standout, UW player and 56ers. Mike is now vice President of Magic Soccer club and coaches kids in the neighborhood. Earlier... three days before the nomination window closes, we received a nomination for Alma Taeuber... the founder of the Regent Soccer Club, the second largest club in the Madison Area Youth Soccer Association. Alma was a tireless promoter of youth soccer until her recent death on 3rd March 2009. Today... the last day... I found a great nomination for David Harris in my mailbox. Most local soccer players will know of David's refereeing abilities. He has refereed two Final Four Div. 1 games. For the last 13 years he has been a Coordinator of Officials Nationwide for 31 Div.1 schools including, SMU, South Carolina, Tulsa, Notre Dame, Louisville, Marquette, St Louis to name but a few. More locally, David has coordinated soccer camps in southern Wisconsin for the past 16 years. Just when I thought we were done... "clunk" went my mailbox lid... 10:15 at night! Nominations for... Paul Korger has been in the soccer arena since 1979, first promoting youth soccer in the Spring Harbor Soccer Association in Madison and then becoming involved in refereeing for a dozen plus years. Paul has dedicated much of his soccer career to MAYSA and the Madison 56ers. Jose Asturias has been very influential in the Monona / Madison soccer community since the late 50's. He formed the Monona Soccer Club in the 60's, coached at the high school level and numerous youth teams through the years. Grey Perrett was a local Madison goalkeeper that was quickly recruited by the Milwaukee Bavarians. After his playing days were over, Grey represented the Madison area on the Wisconsin Soccer Association Board. He was also involved with the Blackhawks soccer team that competed in the State Major League. Unfortunately for Madison soccer, Grey passed away in February of 2008. Frank Schuler was an original member of the Madison 56ers, first as a high scoring forward but later as a defender and eventually as a keeper. Frank was inducted into the Wisconsin Association Soccer Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to these wonderful nominations there will be others that will come from the MASHoF Board. These will be predominantly those from the 50's & 60's but may also include our own nominations from more recent times. Again, we are hoping to induct a dozen members to the HoF later this year. The closing date for us to accept nominations was April 15th. As mentioned on the Message Board of Madison Soccer Central... anything postmarked after the 15th April deadline will have to be held over until next year. |
