One of my favorite units to teach is the Creative Dance content. There is just an infinite number of ways to manipulate the content. During our first unit, back in October, we looked at simple concepts like traveling forward, backwards and sideways. This is called your "facing. We changed the way we traveled, sometimes walking, sometimes skipping, jogging, galloping or sliding. During the early work, I direction when these changes would happen by banging on a drum but gradually turned over this decision to the kids. We then talked about patterns and made up our own for example, 'forwards walking, backwards jogging, sideways slide forwards walking, backwards jogging, sideways slide' etc. We also spent some time looking at the different pathways that we can travel in the gym. There are three basic pathways; straight, zigzag and curved. No matter where we travel, we are doing one or some combination of these pathways.
In this photo we can see the different pathways drawn on the chalkboard. We really spent some time playing with various elements related to these pathways. For example... "As you travel, make your curves really small. No straight lines." "As you travel, make your curves really big. No straight lines or small curves."
When we looked at zigzags, we really tried to make perfect pathways. We studied what a good zigzag really looked like... pointed corners and no curved corners...
We also talked about symmetry... how the lines on a curve can be different lengths but it can still be a zigzag.
