John Muir kindergartners and first graders (Desjardins, Mueller and Pucci) have been working on their gymnastics skills with Mr. Rumbelow. During the three week unit in November, students memorized the 16 different gymnastics positions that we frequently use. A homework sheet was sent home in the Friday folders asking parents to help their child learn these shapes. The shapes included... Stretch Stride Lunge
One point balance Arabesque
Scale Knee lunge Wolf and Knee wolf Knee Scale Squat Tuck Pike Straddle
V sit
Candle
Side arm cross
In addition to these shapes we learned how to put some of them together into a very short sequence. For example, Knee lunge, roll back to a candle, and roll out to a knee wolf. We have also spent a lot of time working on forward and backward rolls. Going forward, the cues are... stretch; squat; hands on mat close to feet; lift your bottom and... roll. Students were encouraged to try to stand at the end of their roll with their feet together and without using their hands a second time on the mat. This is quite difficult to do.
Here a student gets ready to raise their bottom and roll. Using a wedge helped us to roll backwards down-hill. We also talked about and practiced; making and using "pizza hands" to push on the mat when rolling backwards; keeping our nose close to our knees; staying small and pushing to our feet instead of our knees.
All very cool stuff for little kids!!! |
