The Schools of Hope Project is the culmination of a 1995 civic journalism project by the Wisconsin State Journal and WISC-TV that studied issues crucial to education. A team of AmeriCorps*VISTAs works in 24 local elementary schools to match volunteer tutors with children struggling in reading.
Our mission is to increase the third grade reading scores of children from low income families. Why third grade? Because before third grade, children learn to read, and after third grade, children read to learn.
The Preschools of Hope Project grew out of the Schools of Hope Project. Preschools of Hope works to improve preschool children's early literacy and early math skills, as well as to increase literacy resources at early childhood centers and in students' homes. AmeriCorps*VISTAs serve as volunteer coordinators who place volunteers at nonprofit preschool sites in the Madison area.
Both projects are collaborations between and among United Way of Dane County, RSVP of Dane County, and the Madison Metropolitan School District. The Sun Prairie Area School District and Verona Area School Districts also partner with the project.
