Can I become a member?

Will I have to audition?

What kind of performances does Yahara River Chorus give?

What is "Competition?"

MEMBERSHIP

We'd love to have you visit one of our rehearsals. Every Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., we gather at

Peace Lutheran Church
701 S. Century Avenue
Waunakee, WI 53597

Visit us at our Yahara River Chorus web site or at our rehearsal.
If you like what you see and hear, we will make sure you have all the information you want on joining the chorus. We are always looking for new members and would love to have you join us.

AUDITION

Some people are scared off by the mere mention of the word because they think that means singing alone. That's not true in this case. The first night that you join us, you are taken into a separate room and "voice tested." That means that you will just need to demonstrate to either the director or one of the section leaders the range of your voice in order to place you in the correct voice section. Our voice sections are Tenor - they sing the high notes. Lead - they sing the melody, Bass - they sing the lower notes and rhythm, and finally the Baritones - sing all the notes needed in between the other voices to fill in that 4-part harmony. Sight reading of music is not a necessity because we will provide you with a learning tape to listen to in order to learn your part.

When you finally do get to the "auditioning" part, you will have had several weeks to prepare a song with a practice quartet. They will come in early every week to practice with you and help you until you are ready to audition. The night of the audition, you will be singing your part with the other three parts, and you may request to have the section leader from your part sing behind you to help you out. This, also, is not done in front of the full chorus.

It is really quite easy and the last thing we want to do is make anyone feel uncomfortable. This is a really great hobby and we are hoping you might think it is one that you would enjoy as well.

PERFORMANCES

We perform at many functions, both community service venues and paid appearances. Some are open to the public, some are for a specific audience. Some of the places we have performed are the "Christmas Tree Walk" at the Hilldale Mall; BratFest at Willow Park; the National Anthem for both Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, and the Mallards at Warner Park. We also were invited to sing at the Grand Reopening of both East and West Towne Malls at Christmas.

We produce one major show every year for the public. The last few years we were fortunate to be able to perform at the DeForest Performing Arts Center adjoining the High School in DeForest. This show is traditionally held in the fall. Our 2006 show was called "Barbershop Bandstand" and featured mostly music of the 50's & 60's.

At "Holiday Time", we put on a couple of free shows, usually at more than one location, often at some of the Madison area churches or Senior Residential Facilities. These are advertised to the public and the only admission we ask of the audience is the donation of a non-perishable food item to the church's food pantry, or a cash free will offering for a charity. It is our way of giving back to the communities in which we live.

COMPETITION

We compete each year at our Regional Competition. This usually occurs in the Spring of the year. It is a weekend that we all look forward to because it is a great weekend spent with our sister Sweet Adelines from our region which covers Wisconsin, parts of Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.
