About Us

Adopt A Husky, Inc. is a 501/c/3 organization devoted to rehoming abandoned Siberian Huskies through a network of foster homes. Evolving from a small group of caring individuals, Adopt A Husky, Inc. has been in existence since September of 1998. Our ever-expanding number of volunteers has successfully placed more than 725 deserving dogs since that date, dogs ranging in age from eight weeks to sixteen years, whose only crime was not having been raised in an environment that understood this breed.

Siberian Huskies are high energy, gregarious, independent, and intelligent animals. They were bred to run, and their ancestors have performed this function in harness on sleds for many generations. Unfortunately, many people purchase them from pet stores, puppy mills, or unscrupulous backyard breeders, places that are solely interested in the dollars they receive, and who do not provide prospective buyers with the proper breed information. As a result, many of the dogs end up in shelters as strays, or are given up to shelters by owners who just don't want to be bothered. Occasionally we are asked to take a dog that has been removed from an abusive situation by the authorities. We are also contacted regarding dogs that have lost their owners because of an untimely death or a critical, life-threatening illness.

This is where Adopt A Husky, Inc. enters the picture. Working with shelters and animal control facilities from Minnesota, throughout Wisconsin, down into central Illinois as well as Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan, our organization takes these abandoned dogs, places them in foster homes where they are evaluated for temperament, nurtured, and provided with top medical care.

Before a dog is placed, it has received all vaccinations, is spayed or neutered, tested negative for heartworms (and placed on preventative during the season), plus microchipped for identification. In addition, Adopt A Husky, Inc. has paid for treatment of 37 dogs found heartworm positive in the 1999-2002 timeframe. We have treated dogs that have come to us with other major illnesses, brought them back to health, and placed them. We have had dogs hit by cars, with broken legs and jaws, several with broken pelvises, another requiring removal of an eye. A six month old puppy born with urinary tract problems benefited by surgical repair of her system, a cost of $1900 at the University of Wisconsin Veterinary Hospital. We cared for and rehabilitated a dog that was tortured: he arrived covered with more than two dozen cigarette burns to his face and legs, and a section of his back devoid of skin from being deliberately burned. A young female with sight-threatening cataracts received lens transplants. Adopt A Husky, Inc. covers all medical costs with the assistance of donations from caring individuals.

Our foster homes provide the food, toys, treats, and most importantly, the love that these dogs need. Adopt A Husky, Inc. assumes all medical costs. We have no paid employees, and we exist entirely on donations.
