CELEBRATING BIRDS

AT the Black Earth Campus
Migratory birds travel long distances between breeding and non-breeding sites throughout the Western Hemisphere. In honor of International Migratory Bird Day, bring your family to learn about and see some of Wisconsin's spring migrants as we hike the valley, hills and ridges at ALNC's Black Earth campus! You'll learn basic bird identification by sight and sound, how habitat conservation is especially important to migratory birds and play some fun games and activities along the way! Please bring binoculars if you have them; some binoculars will be available on site. Pre-registration is required. ALNC Members & Non-Members: $5/person or $10/family

A SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY THEATER PERFORMANCE

AT the Black Earth Campus
Treat your family to a theatrical performance of A Spoon River Anthology, presented by Creative Outlets of Whitewater, in two acts. Based on a collection of poems by Edgar Lee Masters, this family-friendly adaptation introduces the audience to a selection of characters from a fictional small town, each of whom returns as a ghost to talk about the successes and disappointments of life in "Spoon River." From the hilarious to the heart-breaking, this exploration of humanity will delight, inspire and invite reflection. Before the performance, join our naturalists for guided hikes on the trails or a tasty campfire treat (pudgy pies, s'mores kits, pop and bottled water will be for sale) from 4-5:15 pm. The performance will begin at 5:30 pm with one 15-minute intermission. Pre-registration recommended; walk-ins accepted. ALNC Members: $10/person; Non-Members: $12/person

EFFECTS OF LAND USE ON THE INTEGRITY OF WISCONSIN STREAMS

Join Mike Miller, Stream Ecologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, for a presentation on how past and present land uses affect Wisconsin's stream resources. Protecting our streams requires wise land use as there is an intimate relationship between land and stream resources. This presentation provides a brief overview of land use effects on streams, ways to protect and improve stream quality and reports on the current condition of Wisconsin's 22,000 streams. This program is co-sponsored with Friends of Edna Taylor Conservation Park, a committee of the Glendale Neighborhood Association.

THE ALIENS HAVE LANDED: EAB IN WISCONSIN

Join Anna Willow, Dane County Invasive Species Planner, to learn about the newest alien invader confirmed in Wisconsin: the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle (EAB). Participants will receive an overview of EAB, see EAB specimens, hear about Dane County's EAB response plan and learn to identify the trees at risk from EAB. This program is sponsored by an Urban Forestry Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; refreshments provided by Friends of Edna Taylor Conservation Park, a committee of the Glendale Neighborhood Association.

LEOPOLD EDUCATION PROJECT – NEW NON-FORMAL CURRICULUM WORKSHOP

This workshop is designed for 4th -12th grade teachers (science, language arts, math, art, history), non-formal educators, natural resource professionals, 4-H and Scout leaders and is appropriate for new and returning LEP participants. FOCUS ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN WISCONSIN

This workshop, designed for 7th - 12th grade educators, will provide participants with the fundamental knowledge to help students understand and address the central concepts of climate change. Designed to teach students how climate change affects all of us in Wisconsin, the program includes twelve engaging activities suitable for classes in English and language arts, environmental education, math, science, art and social studies.

FISHING FAMILY FUN

Fishing was one of the activities most enjoyed by Aldo Leopold as a youngster; join us to learn why in this introduction to angling! You'll see examples of different types of rods and reels, play the "Backyard Bass" fishing game to practice casting, learn how to tie basic fishing knots and catch worms to use as bait as you fish in our pond! The program will be conducted outdoors, rain or shine, so please dress appropriately.
All fishing equipment will be provided by the WDNR.

Join Wisconservation Corp member Alexander Britzius, of the MacKenzie Environmental Education Center, to learn how to harvest natural materials to build the perfect fire using a bow drill, hand drill and fire plow. If successful, we'll celebrate with s'mores over the fire! This program is presented in partnership with the MacKenzie Environmental Education Center. Pre-registration is required.

Puzzling Pond Critters
