for friends and fans of Sherlock Holmes -- celebrating our 40th year! | |
|
THE NOTORIOUS CANARY-TRAINERS ARE ON THE AIR again, this time Monday, Feb. 1, from 7-8 p.m. on the "Access Hour" on WORT-FM. (Update: The program now is available for listening here. It also has been archived for 60 days at WORT-FM. Scroll down to the Feb. 1 "Access Hour" 7 p.m. entry. Both contain the ending of a WORT program just before ours.) It's our second time on the program, the other having been in April when our group celebrated its 40th anniversary. Participating in the upcoming program will be Jim Briggs, Tom Drucker, Mike McCoy, Peter Priegel, and Henry Zecher. The group will consider the many faces and facets of Sherlock Holmes, as well as the world in which he lived. For those not in the station's broadcast range (tune to 89.9 FM otherwise), they can listen to the live broadcast online here. (Check it out at least an hour before the broadcast to make sure you're set to go.) The program also will be archived on the station's Web site after the show. We'll provide more details when we have them. TV ALERT! Wisconsin Public TV continues to air Sherlock Holmes episodes with Jeremy Brett. The upcoming schedule: Jan. 28: "The Sign of Four," Part 2; Feb. 4: "The Hound of the Baskervilles"; Feb. 11: "The Master Blackmailer"; Feb. 18: "The Eligible Bachelor"; and Feb. 25: "The Last Vampyre." All air at 8 p.m. in the Thursday series. THE NOTORIOUS CANARY-TRAINERS are early in a new cycle of studying the 60 documented cases of Sherlock Holmes, making now an ideal time for newcomers to the Holmes' Canon and the Canary-Trainers to begin the journey with us. Having just said "goodbye" in October to a Sherlock Holmes in retirement (in "His Last Bow"), we tagged along at our November and December meetings with Dr. Watson to say "hello" to Sherlock Holmes in the first published account which introduced him to the world, in 1887. We're taking each case in order of publication. We've just concluded a five-plus years of study taking the cases in chronological order of their occurrence, as determined by Sherlockian scholar William S. Baring-Gould. Our next meeting is February 21 to explore "The Sign of the Four" (Part 1) For a complete 2010 meeting schedule, click here. Meetings take place at Booked for Murder, 2701 University Ave. in the Lakepoint Commons shopping center. Please join us, and bring along friends you think might be interested. There's no charge to attend and our meetings are open to the public. (You also don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes expert.) Each month we provide background on our Web site about the upcoming story of the month. Check out our updated case notes a week or two in advance of each meeting. MINNESOTA'S GREAT SHERLOCK HOLMES COLLECTION. "Deep in an underground cavern at the University of Minnesota lies the world's largest collection of Holmes memorabilia a cache sure to expand with material from the new 'Sherlock Holmes' movie starring Robert Downey Jr. as the pipe-puffing super sleuth."
