THE NOTORIOUS CANARY-TRAINERS are beginning a new cycle of studying the 60 documented cases of Sherlock Holmes, making now an ideal time for newcomers to the Holmes' Canon and the Canary-Trainers to begin the journey with us.

Having just said "goodbye" last month to a Sherlock Holmes in retirement (in "His Last Bow"), we next tag along with Dr. Watson to say "hello" to Sherlock Holmes in the first published account which introduced him to the world.

Starting with our Nov. 15 meeting, we're taking each case in order of publication. We've just concluded a five-plus years of study taking the cases in chronological order of their occurrence, as determined by Sherlockian scholar William S. Baring-Gould.

We begin this new series with "A Study in Scarlet," first published in 1887. One of the four novel-length accounts, we'll study Part 1 Nov. 15 and finish with the second and last part on Dec. 20. Meetings take place at Booked for Murder, 2701 University Ave. in the Lakepoint Commons shopping center. (For a complete 2010 meeting schedule, click here.)

Please join us, and bring along friends you think might be interested. There's no charge to attend and our meetings are open to the public. (You also don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes expert.)

Each month we provide background on our Web site about the upcoming story of the month. Check out our November case notes when we begin our new cycle.

TV ALERT! Wisconsin Public TV continues to air Sherlock Holmes episodes with Jeremy Brett. Remaining this month: Nov. 19 "The Three Gables" and Nov. 26 "The Dying Detective." They'll be followed by Dec. 10 "The Golden Prince-Nez;" Dec. 17 "The Red Circle;" Jan. 7 "The Mazarin Stone;" Jan. 14 "The Cardboard Box;" Jan. 21 "The Sign of Four," Part 1; and Jan. 28 "The Sign of Four," Part 2.

All air at 8 p.m. in the Thursday series. No showings are scheduled Dec. 3, 24, or 31.

HERE ARE THE PLANS FOR OUR 10TH ANNUAL OBSERVANCE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES' BIRTH which include a Jan. 3 luncheon and a viewing of the new Hollywood movie, "Sherlock Holmes." We still have one seat left for the luncheon in the private dining room,and can accommodate (as of Nov. 16) up to 4 more who can eat nearby in the restaurant and join us for the program. More

HERE'S THE LATEST TRAILER – apparently the final one this year -- which Warner Bros. released the first week of November promoting the Dec. 25 opening of "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. (See the separate article immediately above about our Jan. 3 party plans for this movie.)

It runs 2 minutes 30 seconds and includes scenes not in previous trailers.
