Major Holmes Exhibit
Available Online!

10/24/2002

A major American exhibition on Sherlock Holmes at Indiana University in 2001 now is available online!

The "Bloomington by Gaslight" exhibit displays many of the Sherlock Holmes items featured in that event at the world-famous Lilly Library.

Why was this exhibit at IU (located in Bloomington, Indiana)? Because the head librarian at the time, the late David Randall, also was a member of the Baker Street Irregulars, and made it a personal goal to build a major Holmes exhibit for the Lilly collection.

That exhibit included, for example, the only surviving letter from Holmes to Watson in a fragment of the manuscript of "Final Problem," original manuscripts by Arthur Conan Doyle, and many other items.

Now, you can view the exhibit online, at this Web address: www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/holmes/index.shtml (or click here).

There, you'll be able to follow any of these tracks by positioning your cursor on various headings, and clicking. Those headings are:

  • Introduction
  • Predecessors and Contemporaries
  • The Origin of Sherlock Holmes
  • The Adventures...
  • The Sign of Four
  • The Hound of the Baskervilles
  • The Memoirs...
  • Holmes's "Death" and The Return...
  • The Final Tales and Beyond
  • Doyle and Holmes Continue
  • Holmesiana
  • Holmes on Radio, Stage, and Screen
