January 6 is the generally-accepted anniversary of the birth in 1854 of Sherlock Holmes.

May 4 is the generally-accepted date of the "death" of Sherlock Holmes. According to Baring-Gould's chronology in his "The Annotated Sherlock Holmes," the case entitled 'The Final Problem' takes place on Friday, April 24, through Monday, May 4, 1891, when Holmes famously struggled with Professor Morarity at Reichenbach Falls and both were reported as having fallen to their deaths. At the time Holmes was 37 years old. (Fortunately, all was not as it appeared and Holmes would return in three years to continue to solve many more cases before his well-deserved quiet retirement.)

May 22 is the anniversary of the birth of Arthur Conan Doyle, doctor, English writer and literary agent for Sherlock Holmes, who was born on this date in 1859. (See July 7 for information about his death.) Click here for a Doyle timeline and here for more on him. Doyle also was honored on this date in 2006 when the Web search engine Google modified its logo (shown at right) for one day.
Those who clicked on the logo also got a list of 157,000 or so links to Web sites with more about Doyle and Holmes. To see that list, click here.

June 13 is the anniversary of the birth of English actor Basil Rathbone (born Philip St. John Basil Rathbone), famed for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a series of Hollywood movies in the 1930s and 1940s, who was born on this date in 1892. For more information about him, click here. (Also see July 21.)

July 7 is the anniversary of the death in 1930 of Arthur Conan Doyle, a doctor, English writer, and literary agent for Sherlock Holmes, who died at age 71. Read his obituary in the New York Times. Click here for photos of Doyle and his tombstone. (Click on the "more photos" option to see the tombstone.) (Also see May 22.) Click here for a Doyle timeline.

July 21 is the anniversary of the death in 1967 of Basil Rathbone. (Also see June 13.)

September 12 is the anniversary of the death of English actor Jeremy Brett, beloved by many Sherlock Holmes' fans for his portrayal of the Master Detective in the long-running Granada TV series. For more on Brett, click here. (Also see November 3.)

November 3 is the anniversary of the birth of Jeremy Brett, born on this date in 1933 in Berkswell, Warwickshire, England. (Also see September 12.)
