Here are some of the things we accomplished in 2006, most recent listed first: CHORDSMEN GO CAROLING Capitol Chordsmen caroled up and down State Street from the Capitol to Library Mall from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, and all had a great time. Read more about this first-time event by clicking here. 'HEARTSONG' QUARTET TAKES 'BE PREPARED' MOTTO TO HEART! Members of the Madison Chapter-supported 'Heartsong' quartet stopped by a live broadcast of public radio's "Whad'ya Know?" syndicated program with Michael Feldman Dec. 2, on their way to a singing engagement, only to end up as part of the Feldman show. OPEN CALL FOR SINGER NIGHTS HELD IN SEPTEMBER The Chorus held an Open Call for Singers on three consecutive Tuesdays starting Sept. 12, and demonstrated for those attending both chorus and quartet singing. For more details, click here. CHORUS, QUARTETS, ENTERTAIN AT 'TASTE OF MADISON'
The Capitol Chordsmen made their first-ever "Taste of Madison" appearance Saturday, Sept. 2, when we performed a 45-minute show for the crowds on a beautiful, sunny afternoon. Also on the program were the Cheery O's and the Heartsong quartets. The special stage was set up next to the State Street entrance onto Capitol Square. CHORUS, 'REGAL BLEND' QUARTET PERFORMED AT DEAN HOUSE JULY 27 The Capitol Chordsmen returned to the Dean House in Monona July 27 to sing as the headliner for another in the Dean House's "Back Porch" summertime concert series. Joining us for the 7:15 p.m. performance was the 'Regal Blend' quartet from the Northern Gateway Chorus in Stevens Point. The Dean House is located at 4718 Monona Drive. SANG AT SUNDAY SERVICES AT ASBURY UNITED METHODIST The Chordsmen July 23 were part of the 8:30 and 10 a.m. Sunday services at Asbury United Methodist Church on University Ave., singing "I'll Fly Away" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." CHORDSMEN PART OF MEDAL-WINNING CHORUS Chapter members John Miller, tenor, and Richard Chapman, baritone, and former Chapter members Matt Banberry and Roger Rattan , were part of the Midwest Vocal Express' medal-winning performance in international competition in Indianapolis in early July. The Greenfield, Wis.-based Chorus took fifth place in the annual contest. CHORDSMEN PICNIC, THEN SING AT MALLARDS GAME The Chorus sang the National Anthem before more than 6,500 fans at Warner Park June 22 when the Madison Mallards hosted the St. Cloud River Bats for a sunny Thursday evening game. We earlier gathered outside the stadium for our annual cookout for Chordsmen, family members, and friends, then stayed for the game. WE SANG AT BRATFEST MAY 29 The Capitol Chordsmen performed on stage as part of 90 minutes of barbershop which started at 11:30 a.m. Labor Day Monday at the World's Largest Bratfest at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center. It's was our inaugural debut at this event. CHORDSMEN HEADLINE AT PORTAGE We headlined at an April 29 evening show at the Portage Center for the Arts, with special guest quartets State Street and Sound Concensus. Click here for more details. 'FOUR VOICES' HEADLINED OUR ANNUAL SHOW The Chorus produced its biggest show of the year April 22 with international champions Four Voices headlining the evening. Also appearing were the Mad Hatters from the University of Wisconsin, and State Street and Heartsong quartets. Get all the details by clicking here. WE SANG AT MADISON'S 150TH CELEBRATION APRIL 9 The Capitol Chordsmen were represented Sunday, April 9, at the city's Monona Terrace (downtown, overlooking beautiful Lake Monona) when the city of Madison officially celebrated its 150th birthday. We were one of dozens of local non-profit groups with our own booth. Wel also had the Sound Concensus and other Chordsmen singing at the booth and while roaming the halls. Among those serenaded were Madison Mayor David Cieslewicz and Miss Wisconsin. (The Chordsmen also used our April 22 show as another opportunity to salute the city, with our production of "A Capitol Birthday." This show also marked the official conclusion of our chapter's 60th anniversary observances.) FEB. 14 ALSO "SINGING VALENTINE" DAY All day Feb. 14, four Capitol Chordsmen quartets dressed in tuxes delivered dozens of Singing Valentines to those in offices, homes, hospitals, restaurants, and workplaces throughout the county. One of the quartets, Tag Along, is shown in the photo to the left delivering a Singing Valentine Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals. Shown (left to right) are: Lee Swanson, Matt Beecher, Alex Martin and Roger Phelps. Read more here . ALEX MARTIN CHOSEN AS "BARBERSHOPPER OF THE YEAR" Alex Martin, the Chorus' Assistant Musical Director, was the recipient of the Madison Chapter's highest award to a member, the Barbershopper of the Year, at ceremonies held Jan. 21. CHAPTER HIRES NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR The Madison Chapter announced Jan. 19 the hiring of 20-year-old Joshua Oxley as Musical Director of the Capitol Chordsmen Chorus, effective Feb. 1.
