YOU CAN SING...EVEN BETTER...WITH THE CAPITOL CHORDSMEN!

Take Advantage of All We Offer
-- in 3 Easy Steps!

On stage at Bratfest 2007

No more just 'singin' in the shower'! Now, you can sing on stage with us!

Members of the Capitol Chordsmen get lots of personal satisfaction out of singing and performing a cappella music with great four-part harmonies and popular melodies that audiences of all ages really enjoy!

We "sing the songs that touch America's heart!" It's our way to summarize what we do -- and why.

If you're a male who loves to sing, you can share in that experience, and learn to sing even better, with the Capitol Chordsmen. It makes no difference whether you usually sing just in the shower or you have experience in other choruses or choirs.

If you currently are a member of another chorus, you still can take advantage of the learning opportunities and individual attention you'll get from the Capitol Chordsmen even while you sing in other groups. Many church choirs don't rehearse in the summer, for example, and you may be looking for ways to keep your voice in shape during this period.

Whatever your reasons or situation, we suggest you "Take Advantage" of us in three easy steps.

STEP 1. Take Advantage of our rehearsals and special events to meet and sing with us!

We meet weekly on Tuesday evenings throughout the year. You can attend as many rehearsals as you like, as our guest. Click here for a map and directions to our rehearsal location.

At your first rehearsal with us, you'll hear us as we go through some of the numbers in our current repetoire and as we prepare for our next show. You'll also be able to join us "on the risers" for any numbers you feel comfortable with singing and which don't involve special choreography.

If you haven't sung with a group for awhile, we'll probably start you off with the lead section (our parts are tenor, lead, baritone and bass). If you're an experienced group singer, you'll join the appropriate section from the start.

We'll provide you with a book for use that night containing the sheet music for all of the songs we'll be singing at that rehearsal.

You'll also have a chance to learn and sing "tags" -- brief harmony-filled pieces of music that can be learned and sung on the spot, and which probably will leave you wanting more.

Stick around as long as you like after the formal rehearsal ends. We often spend some time 'quarteting' afterward.

We recommend you attend at least three rehearsals before taking Step 2 -- but you decide if that's right for you or not.

STEP 2. Take Advantage of a membership!

When you're ready to join, simply tell us -- if we haven't already asked. Memberships are for one year. There are several dues categories.

As part of the new member process, we'll conduct an audition to, among other things, confirm your vocal range and the best section for you to sing in.

  • Never sung barbershop music before? That's fine with us. It just means you are in for a treat.

  • Does the music or learning your part look too difficult? You don't have to read music to sing with us. You can learn by ear using the tools and techniques we'll teach you. Just be patient with yourself; we certainly will be.

  • Think you can't afford the dues? We have a variety of payment plans, one of which should address your concerns. Ask and see. Some expenses, such as for uniforms, also are tax-deductible.

  • Think you'll be the only one in your age group in the Chorus? You'll be just the first. We want to broaden our age range. Those as young as 7 years old can be members.

  • In a job that may involve a transfer? You can transfer your membership to a chorus in your new area. As a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (formerly SPEBSQSA, or the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc.), you'll find you'll have new friends waiting for you wherever you go.

  • Have a physical disability? No problem for us. We'll work with you on an accommodation.

STEP 3. Take Advantage of all the membership opportunities!

Learn about some of the things we've been doing recently. Click here.

As a Capitol Chordsmen member, you also become a member of the worldwide barbershop music fraternity and Barbershop Harmony Society.

You'll soon get in the mail a Barbershop Harmony Society new member packet with lots of information about barbershop music, as well as free sheet music to help get you started. You'll also get a subscription to their great bi-monthly magazine, The Harmonizer, become eligible for member discounts at the Harmony Marketplace (a great resource for barbershop sheet music and recordings), and be eligible for a variety of other benefits.

We'll also work with you on a personal development plan and help you track goals for your own development as a Chordsman.
