Free 'Barbershoppers' Thanksgiving' concert Nov. 17

An evening of barbershop with Chordsmen, Sound of Madison

10/25/2007

A free all-barbershop concert featuring the Capitol Chordsmen and the Sound of Madison choruses singing for the Madison-area community is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

Also singing on the program are two quartets -- the Sound of Madison's "Vocal Union" and the Chordsmen's "Heartsong".

"A Barbershoppers' Thanksgiving" is a one-hour-plus concert by the two Madison-based groups offering four-part harmony for all ages and an opportunity for those who attend to donate cash or checks for pre-holidays delivery to Madison-area food pantries.

"We sing so others may eat" is the theme of the evening.

For the Chordsmen, it also will be the last public performance of several numbers from their current repertoire.

The Chordsmen have been a Madison-based a cappella men's group since its formation in 1945. Known for "Singing the songs that touch America's heart," it has performed for over 13,000 people in Wisconsin and Minnesota so far this year. Part of the international Barbershop Harmony Society, its director is Joshua Oxley.

The Sound of Madison chorus is a group of women under the direction of Nancy Pike who also sing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. Affiliated with Sweet Adelines International, the chorus regularly entertains at both public and private events in the Madison area with a repertoire consisting of a wide variety of music, including old favorites, gospel, patriotic, and contemporary.

Other barbershop entertainment, including some quartet singing, may be added to the program.

The venue is the Asbury United Methodist Church, on Madison's west side at 6101 University Ave., a handicapped-accessible facility. Seating is unreserved. There's also free parking in the church's large lot.
