Come rain or shine, many Madison area residents will join the Madison Area CROP Hunger Walk/Rock event on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. The 1.5 or 3.5 mile WALK through Tenny, Burrows and Johnson Parks will begin and end at Christ Presbyterian Church at 944 East Gorham Street. Those unable to Walk can join a group of rockers in rocking chairs at the church during the time of the event. Because of the liability, CROP will not mark or sponsor a bike route, but bikers are welcome to bike at their own risk. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. To sign up and get pledge forms, posters, bulletin inserts and educational materials, call the CROP office at 222-7008 or email CROP at Email Me! Organized locally, the 34th Annual Madison Area CROP Hunger Walk/Rock Event has set a goal of 60 participating groups, 600 walkers and bikers and hopes to raise at least $80,000 to help stop hunger in our community and around the world through self-help development initiatives. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised in Madison will be returned locally to the Dane County Food Pantries and the evening Meals on Wheels program of Independent Living. The Madison Area CROP Hunger Walk/Rock Event is one of 1,800 interfaith, community CROP events taking place around the country this year with the theme - We Walk Because They Walk. Wisconsin sponsors 70-75 CROP events each year, raising over $650,000 to help fight hunger. The Madison event raised over $40,000 in 2000 and 2001, $50,000 in 2002, $60,000 in 2003 and 2004, $70,000 in 2005 and 2006, and $82,000 in 2007. Africa is one part of the world where CROP WALKS are making a big difference - in helping people grow food for their families, in providing clean water to villages, in the struggle against the AIDS epidemic, and in countless other ways.
