The AITDJB is a small combo playing early New Orleans-style jazz. Begun in 2001 as a way to keep young saxophone players off the streets of McFarland, the group was originally made up mostly of McFarland High School students; as the photo at right shows, we have aged somewhat since. The band is a summer phenomenon: we rehearse only in months that have mosquitoes in them. But sometimes we perform in months that have had no rehearsals in them.

Though we are known locally as the finest Dixiland combo in the Lesser McFarland area, we do get around some. In McFarland, we perform at ice cream socials in the Larson Park gazebo, fundraising events, community band concerts, MHS musical events, and the prestigious McFarland Family Festival Talent Showcase. And we ride in parades. But we have also performed at summer music clinics in Platteville and a Hurricacane Katrina relief event in Madison. Once we made an excursion as far as Green Bay, to perform at Lambeau Field, a venue to which Glenn Nielsen is particularly keen to return. We are available for church picnics and for funerals.

In 2008 some of our recent veterans have left college and are eyeballing the Real World (TM), and several others are about to: their schedules are complex. Nevertheless most of them have returned for another season of summer jazz. And we're welcoming some new blood, as is our custom. Here's the 2008 Almost In Time lineup:

Eric Adams: percussion
Brad Anderson: percussion
Andrea Bakunowicz: tenor sax, vocals & 'twixt-set entertainment
Amanda DeBoer: vocals, kazoo, & 'twixt-set vocals
Autumn Leonard: trombone, banjo, kazoo, 'gins to play, & 'twixt-set vocals
Isis Leonard: ensemble piano
Quinn Leonard: tuba
Tonya Neumann: tenor sax, bari sax, vocals, & kazoo
Glenn Nielsen: clarinet, 'gins to play (also, our musical conscience)
Beau Peregoy: vocals
Frank Ransley: trumpet, 'gins to play
Gena Roisum: clarinet, tenor sax
Ally Schmaling: vocals
Sara Siegmann: ensemble & accompaniment piano, probably kazoo
Zach Staszewski: vocals; 'twixt-set vocals, kazoo, 'gins to play, & spirittoo
Kolin Walker: trumpet

We also hope for special appearances by McFarland's own Anne Nichols on vocals and Brian Vanderbloemen on tenor sax or clarinet. Or trombone. Whatever he wants to play, really.

The 2006 AITDJB at the McFarland Family Festival

In 2006 the McFarland High School Homecoming sported a James Bond theme. The Homecoming and Family Festival parades were coincident, so the AITDJB turned out in our Bondish finery for the occasion.

Back row, left to right:
Becky Schultz, Tonya Neumann, Quinn Leonard, Glenn Nielsen,
Eric Adams, Zach Staszewski, Emily Raasch, Nick Bakunowicz,
Frank Ransley, Sara Siegmann

Lurking on the ground, left to right:
Autumn Leonard, Brad Anderson

Not shown, left to right:
Andrea Bakunowicz, Scott Birrenkott, Bria Mason

(Doesn't subfusc suit Sara?)

Almost In Time 2005 in the McFarland Family Festival parade

In 2005, the rhythmic ceremonial rituals for Homecoming involved an Enchantment Under the Sea theme, or something like that. We got nothin' if we ain't got spirit; here's how we turned out:

Standing on ground, L to R:
Glenn Nielsen
Frank Ransley
Tonya (the Little Mermaid) Neumann
Standing on float, L to R:
Poseidon Leonard
Zach "Bubbles" Staszewski
Eric "Bait Cutter" Adams
Seated on float, L to R:
Autumn "Pinup Dude" Leonard
Becky Schultz
Not shown:
Brad Anderson, Bria Mason, Sara Siegmann

The Almost In Time Dixieland Jazz Band is a member in good standing of the America's Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society. Besides the obvious acronym excitement if we ever do a concert under their auspices (AITDJB @ AFCDJS !), membership mostly means that we get access to their library of music arrangements.

Members of the band are active in other groups showcased on this site: The Solstice Brass quartet, The Wind in the Reeds trio, and The Second String Violin Duo.

Also available: A list of Upcoming Events; Member Biographies; and Audio Clips of some of our arrangements.
