STRINGS UNDER GLASS

Madison's Olbrich Botanical Gardens are lovely even in winter: a perfect backdrop for a violin recital. The
Suzuki Strings of Madison, under the direction of Maria-Rosa Germain, Diana Popowycz, and sundry other talented faculty, held their Holiday Concert in the tall-windowed Olbrich meeting hall on the afternoon of Sunday 16 December. Attendance was not limited to the usual selection of parents; a few patrons from the conservatory wandered in, too, and seemed happy to be there.

The program featured such Suzuki staples as the Bach double concerto and the Seitz 5th; but, refreshingly, the group played many non-Suzuki Holiday selections. We heard a fine Carol of the Bells, a lively Dreydl Song, and nice setting of Silent Night. There was also a gorgeous What Child Is This?, which I wish I had for my collection. I think the arrangement may originally have been for boys' choir; its parts translated very well to violins.

In fact, most of the concert was polyphonic, a notion typically anathema to the Suzuki method. For part of the performance the violinists were dispersed around the room and in the aisles among the audience, in small groups covering each part. It was a fine effect, and a good glipmse of what these students can do when they play outside the box.

AN AFTERNOON OF CHAMBER MUSIC

On the afternoon of Sunday 9 December, the
WYSO Chamber Music Ensembles gave their winter performance at the Olbrich botanical gardens. Isis Leonard was featured, playing first violin in a spririted performance of Mozart's 1st string quartet.

NO FROZEN BRASS THIS YEAR

(most of) the 2007
Solstice Brass

The Solstice Brass performed at the McFarland State Bank during Christmas in the Village, acting as Santa's Little Backup Band as usual. But we didn't play at the bonfire: there was frozen sleet falling, and it was too much for even the hardiest horns.

The image shows, from left to right: Frank Ransley (SB 2003 - 2007, AITDJB 2004 - 2008), Frank Ransley (SB 2007), Autumn Leonard (AITDJB 2001 - 2008, SB 2001 - 2007), and Quinn Leonard (SB 2001 - 2008, AITDJB 2001 - 2007). Kolin Walker is walking out of the photo. The bank was snug and warm, but we decided not to deal with the bonfire. However, a few castoffs from these music groups may, or may not, have gone to bonfire anyway, to sing carols to the McWorkers.
