The Solstice Brass perform traditional and jazzy holiday arrangements at events in the McFarland area during December. In recent years, we have played at the Harmony House living center and at the Stoughton nursing home. Since 2003, Anne Nichols has been kind enought to let us serve as crowdwarmers for the McFarland High School winter vocal concert, and play backup and do-wahs with the MHS choir; we look forward to that opportunity again this year.

Solstice Brass 2006:
frozen lips

Each year we also perform at carefully selected sites as part of McFarland's Christmas in the Village celebration. Selection criteria include temperature and food. We usually play at the bonfire before the Tree Lighting, if it's not so cold that our lips would freeze to our brass. We also play at the McFarland State Bank, which is warmer, and they give us cookies.

The 2004 Solstice Brass

Since the 2003 season we have had the pleasure of being joined by woodwind ensemble pieced together from McFarland students. Another highlight was our collaboration with the brilliant Bria Mason on an unusual rendition of "Greensleeves", arranged for solo soprano vs. brass quartet. Such things are seldom heard. Then there was the year the French horn's rotors froze, and she had to lip everything, and the time Autumn tried to thaw his horn by playing close to the bonfire, and his music went up in flames . . .

See our audio clip archive for other stimulating material.
