In the winter of 2003, three beginning woodwind students formed the Wind in the Reeds trio to play at McFarland's Christmas in the Village events. The performers had at that time about 18 months' experience on their instruments, but only if you added them all up. They rehearsed several evenings in November, preparing intensively with the aid of whiteboards and oscilloscopes. By December they were ready to perform some challenging holiday arrangements at the Harmony House living center and at the McFarland State Bank. For the 2004 season, we were happy to be joined by an oboist. The addition of a fourth voice expanded the arrangements we coul play, and gave Melissa a rest from always playing the melody. 2005 members of the Wind in the Reeds are: Nora Hickey, violin and bassoon The group's instrumentation is nonstandard: it's odd to have an alto sax among such nice orchestral instruments. But the flexibility of the players, and their enthusiastic willingness to read in keys that were ideal for none of them, makes the music work. Also available: A list of Upcoming Events; Member Biographies; and Audio clips of some of our arrangements. Photo courtesy of Tim Funk |
