Support Groups for Adults with Epilepsy
|
Did you know that the Epilepsy Foundation South Central Wisconsin serves 15 counties in Wisconsin? In some areas we have a very active presence. For example, in Madison we have a support group that has been meeting for almost 20 years! We also have monthly meetings in La Crosse.
You may have epilepsy yourself. Or perhaps you have a child or other family member that has seizures, or a close friend. Control of seizures is a continuous process, and at times may seem like an uphill battle. Even with good control, epilepsy affects many aspects of daily life, driving, employment, learning, medication side effects, costs of health care, even self-esteem.
One of the best weapons with which to arm yourself in this battle with epilepsy is knowledge. Knowledge gives you the power to take back control of your life. It will enable you to work closely with your health care providers, to determine the best medical treatments and to be aware of and advocate for your rights in education, employment, transportation, and other aspects of life. By gaining in knowledge you will be able to share with family members, friends, and co-workers the truth about this disorder, reduce the ignorance that leads to fear, and help eradicate the stigma that still persists in society. Sharing your knowledge is like dropping a stone in a pond -- the ripple effect spreads out in an ever-widening circle. E.R. Hargis.
