About Us

Even Start was created by a grant through the William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy program, Title I, Part B, enacted by the Literacy Involves Families Together (LIFT) Act in 1988. The Madison Even Start Family Literacy Program was founded in 1996 to serve the literacy needs of economically and educationally impoverished families living in the area. Since that time, Even Start has grown into a multi-site program, serving families across Madison, Verona and Fitchburg.

Through participation in the Even Start program, families demonstrate a strong commitment to improving their educational and employment possibilities. This program was founded on the concept that children's language and learning skills are greatly improved by their parent's involvement. Based on this belief, the program strives to make the parent their child's first and best teacher through instruction, modeling and mentoring.
