Travelling sustainably can be an act of worship, and can inspire others to travel lightly on the Earth as well. Although transportation may not seem like a spiritual issue, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) recently identified transportation as the most significant, consumer-related environmental problem. Of great importance is the tremendous contribution that cars and light trucks make to global warming (almost 30 percent of all greenhouse gasses). If one person switched his or her daily driving to using public transportation, the household carbon footprint could decrease by 10 percent, or 4,800 pounds in a year.
Emissions pollute the air we breath and alter wildlife habitat. Therefore, the UCS encourages everyone to make transportation efficiency (e.g., using more efficient, less polluting vehicles; walking; bicycling; taking public transit; carpooling; etc.) a top priority. You can help your congregation share the Earth with the rest of creation by making wise personal transportation choices.
