SUGGESTIONS FOR TALLYING SUSTAINABLE RIDES The goal of our tally is to assess the proportion of all trips to worship that involve car-limited travel such as car pooling, bicycling, walking, riding the bus, skate boarding or something else that does not involve driving alone. That requires guesstimates for both the numerator and the denominator. The denominator or total number of people is usually estimated by knowing the capacity of a room and an appraisal of attendance relative to that capacity. The bulk of this discussion is concerned with how to estimate the number of sustainable trips or the numerator. The actual mechanics of tallying such trips can range from very informal, mainly relying on the honor system, to a more formally attended system. Tally forms can be downloaded from the web using Excel or can be obtained by asking for hard-copies to be mailed. Information on how to request those forms is at the end. Informally, you can simply post a tally sheet at the entrance that people can sign, posting a reminder that they should do so if they traveled in a sustainable way. More formally, you can attend a table at the entrance asking everyone to sign if they came in a sustainable way. Alternately, you can pass around a clipboard at the beginning of your meeting, asking that people who traveled in a sustainable way sign in. Motorcycles and 2-stroke scooters do not count. Hybrid cars count PARTIALLY (1/2). Hybrids are more fuel-efficient than ordinary cars, but still require costly roads and parking facilities. (Car pooling with a hybrid would be ideal.) Children and adults, visitors and friends all count fully. There is no need to distinguish between people. Family members can carpool if instead of a usual two or three, they use only one or two cars. It is up to them to say what the situation is. If you wish to receive hard copies of the tally sheet, please contact Susan De Vos at atwfus@tds.net or (608) 265-9057 (weekday hours). You will need to leave a name and address.
