Why We Care
When a parent goes to prison, his/her children feel lonely, afraid and embarrassed. They may be uprooted and placed in a living situation that is less than ideal. Pressures on the children's caregivers, lack of transportation and other barriers often make visits to the prison difficult. The children may act out in anger or withdraw. Research shows that these children endure the trauma of separation better when they visit their parent regularly. Our experience bears this out. We also believe that regular visits make the parent-child relationship easier to restore after the parent is released. While the children are our primary concern, we firmly believe that incarcerated parents, caregivers and society benefit as well. |
