Approximately 11 million Americans suffer from Food Allergies. Eight food account for 90% of all food allergic reactions in the United States. They are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shell fish. Food allergy is the leading cause of anaphylaxis outside the hospital setting causing about 30,000 emergency visits per year. Approximately 150-200 people die annually from anaphylaxis to food, including children and young adults. Approximately 2 million school aged children have food allergies. One in every 20 children under 3 years old has food allergies. Teens and Young adults with peanut or tree nut allergy and asthma appear to be at increased risk for severe or fatal allergic reactions. |
