Operation Fresh Start (OFS) provides volunteer opportunities of two types:

Volunteer Tutors and Mentors:

Young people studying to improve literacy, math, other basic academic skills, computer skills, and prepare for GED/HSED tests benefit from one-on-one assistance by qualified tutors. Mentors with specialized skills are also needed to work with individual young people to help them improve interpersonal skills, leadership abilities, personal financial management, and parenting skills. Career guidance, consumer and nutritional education, written driver's license tutoring, and housing counseling are examples of other areas in which mentors can assist young people to become independent and successful adults. OFS is eager to recruit adult volunteer tutors and mentors from all cultural backgrounds who can serve at least one hour per week. Flexible scheduling is possible. To discuss volunteer tutor/mentor options, contact Karen or Julie at 244-4721.

Housing Construction:

The training and supervision of young people is OFS' paramount concern on the housing sites. For this reason, OFS is not able to routinely involve volunteers in housing construction. However, OFS encourages volunteer participation of two types in our housing projects. First, skilled members of the trades who are able to volunteer on site periodically can be valuable role models and mentors to young people learning good work skills and construction skills in particular. In addition, groups of volunteers who can spend one afternoon per month on site, for example, can provide a boost to OFS construction crews and offer participants an opportunity to demonstrate skills and interact with adults on the worksite. To discuss volunteering on the housing site, please contact George at 244-4721.
