FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the Farm's main features?
The original farmstead has farm buildings typical of the early 20th century with corresponding artifacts. An heirloom garden produces vegetables of the era, and the large grounds provide picnic facilities. Approximately ten acres of previous cropland has been restored to native prairie vegetation, with walking trails throughout. The trails are available for ungroomed cross country skiing. Public events sponsored by the Friends of Schumacher Farm offer interactive experiences.

A new Center for Rural History – a timber-frame barn – is under construction, and will serve as the park's headquarters and visitor center.

When is the park open?
The park grounds are open during daylight hours year-round. The buildings are open during featured public events and when staff members are present.

Is camping allowed?
No. Information on camping facilities offered by Dane County Parks is available by calling 608-246-3896 or checking their website at www.countyofdane.com/lwrd/parks/.

Are the facilities available for rent?
Yes. The farmhouse and 1908 barn are reservable for a fee by calling 608-849-4559. The grounds are available for public use, unreserved, on a first-come, first-served basis, at no charge. Private outdoor events requiring a tent are at a cost arranged through the Dane County Parks office at 608-246-3896.

What types of groups may use the facilities?
The Farm has provided space for private parties, weddings, tours by garden clubs, Scouts, and prairie enthusiasts, office staff retreats, volunteer requirements etc. School groups also visit the Farm on field trips.

How does one become a member of the Friends?
Visit the website or contact the park office at 608-849-4559. Memberships are available at $15 for individuals, $20 for families, and $100 for sponsor levels. Lifetime membership is also available upon request.

What picnic and recreational facilities are available?
At least six picnic tables are on site, and more may be reserved through Dane County Parks. There are no campfire pits. Because the park is of farmstead character, there is no contemporary playground equipment. However, there is a sandbox, and games such as croquet are available to groups with reservations, if requested.

Is there on-site parking?
There is space adequate for a few cars in the farmstead driveway off Hwys 19/113. For larger events with many cars, visitors are directed to a mowed field accessible from Schumacher Road that borders the park on the west side. The walk from the parking lot to the farmstead grounds is not long; however, it involves a climb that could be difficult for some people. Handicapped parking is available at larger events upon request.

Are dogs allowed in the park?
Dogs on leashes are allowed on the farmstead grounds and throughout the prairie trails. Dane County Parks requires permits; consult their website or call their office at 608-246-3896 for more information.
