Triple Interpretive Hikes in honor of National Trails Day at John Muir Park

John Muir Park
The Park is a listed site in the new Great Wisconsin Birding and Natural Trails booklet. There are three hikes scheduled during the day; participate in one, two, or all three:
9:00 a.m. - Hike Observatory Hill, a boyhood haunt of John Muir lead by Cathy Franks and Charlie Church of the Prairie Enthusiasts.
11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - Hike John Muir Park State Natural Area lead by Mark Martin DNR and Sue Foote Martin, Bureau of Endangered Wildlife and Coordinator of the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail project.
12:30 - 1:30 p.m. - Lunch.
1:30 - 3:00 p.m. - Hike the Fox River Refuge led by Sadie O'Dell of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Ice Age Trail Hike, Marquette Segment with WI Go Hiking Club
Date: 5/25/2008
An exploratory hike with the WI Go Hiking Club along the Portage Canal to Governors Bend County Park (round trip from Portage).
Meet at the parking lot at the North end of Agency House Rd in Portage between 10:15 and 10:30 am.
Bring lunch and water. Waterproof boots are recommended - just in case. Great walk for birding.
Frog Hike and Teacher Training

Teacher Workshop and FROG HIKE with Randy Korb.
The teacher workshop will take place from 3:00-6:00 at the Westfield High School Library and the live frog family presentation and frog hike will be from 7:30 to 9:30.
The family presentation will begin at the Westfield High School library and than transition to an outdoor natural area. Rubber boots,liquids, flashlights or head lamps, bug spray, change of clothes for young kids, layers depending on the weather. Appropriate and great fun for kids and adults of all ages. A donation will be requested.
Work Day at John Muir Park

9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. - We're teaming up with the Prairie Sands Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts to survey and identify garlic mustard and begin implementation of management strategies toward its removal. Bring gloves, long sleeves, parsnip shovels, other shovels, sturdy shoes, lunch, lots of liquids... and binoculars for the birds.

Cranes on the Prairie: Interpretive Hike

Celebrate "John's" birthday (Muir) and Earth Day. Learn about crane behavior, discuss prairie restoration,share birthday cake,meet friends. Meet at 6:00 at John Muir Park south of Montello on Hwy F. This hike will be a collaboration with the new chapter of the Prairie Enthusiasts. Dress in layers, bring binoculars, water proof boots, flashlights, coffee/tea cups.

Collaborate workday with the Sierra Club and DNR. Arrive at the Park on Hwy F north of Portage at 9:30. Tasks may include, brush hauling, burning, chain saw work. Bring gloves, boots, shovels, clippers,and dress in layers. Bring water and a lunch. If snow is deep consider snow shoes.
