Kennedy Heights Community Center
|
Kennedy Heights Community Center provides social, cultural, recreational,
and educational programs for the children and adults living at Kennedy Heights
in the hopes of adding variety and enrichment to their lives.
Description: The Kennedy Heights Community Center is a community center serving
the north-east side of Madison -- specifically the 104 apartments in the
Kennedy Heights low and medium income housing project. The building and
its programs foster community integration and activities for the many Hmong
families living in this neighborhood.
The Center offers programs and services to the adults and children living
in this diverse community. The activities and programs are reliant on volunteers
for their new ideas, energy, and skills. It is a place for integration and
provides the numerous volunteers, as well as the residents, an enriching
experience.
History: Kennedy Heights Neighborhood Association was formed in 1983 in
response to an increased concern over vandalism, delinquency, and lack of
cohesiveness in this affordable housing community. In 1986, money was attained
to build the apartment complex's first Community Center, which was expanded
and modified to its present form in 1994. The Kennedy Heights Community
Center has maintained the association's original goal to provide activities
specifically designed for low and middle income families.
