Are You Looking For A Pet Bird? Please Consider Adoption!
Open your hearts and your homes and welcome a homeless pet bird into your lives... |

There are many homeless animals in our community today. For whatever reason, some people will buy their new pet on impulse, not knowing all the information or needs of that animal until after they take it home. When they tire of the animal or can no longer handle the animal, they may wish to discard it like the trash they no longer want. In the worst case they will set it free to fend for itself in a hostile new world.
The problem is this animal has been a pet, it has been taken out of its natural world and placed into our world, it can no longer care for itself and will usually die without our help. Our pet birds would have a difficult time surviving in the real world. Many of our pet birds are very colorful, from South America and Africa, totally different weather and different diets. In addition, the one thing that attracts us to these beautiful animals is their vibrant colors. In the wild, those same colors would also attract a predator much quicker.
The lucky few who are brought in or found end up in temporary shelters. Their lives have been turned upside down, some of them barely surviving. Birds are highly intelligent animals, very different than your typical cat or dog, requiring more attention for their highly active brains. Bird are living beings, they have feelings, suffer from pain, neglect and rejection and can become so depressed that they will pluck all of their feathers out, some simply go insane. That's why it is so important that these beautiful animals find new homes so they can be loved and nurtured as soon as possible. When the owner gives up on the bird who then steps forward to take in the poor unwanted bird, if it survives long enough?
The people at the Humane Society, animal rescues, bird sanctuaries and friends that's who. They do this out of the kindness of their hearts, through little or in most cases no support from the people buying or selling these animals. Most pet stores are in the business of selling animals, and making a profit. People at the Humane Society, animal rescues and sanctuaries are in it for the animal, and survive through donations raised for their cause, and are not for profit. They want to take in the unwanted animal, care for it, love it for they are in this for the animal. When it is ready and healthy, they work to adopt it to a family that will carry on this love for the rest of the animal's life. People who work for the animal's welfare will also take the time to work with you and the pet you want to adopt, to see if there is a good match and that you understand the animals needs before allowing you to adopt it. That's a very big difference and it is better for you and the animal too. When it comes to adopting birds in our community, there are two places I recommend. The Dane County Humane Society and CARE.
Whether you are looking for a new pet bird to adopt or looking to help the people who help these homeless animals, please visit our web sites to learn more. MACAW works to help all avian causes. Throughout our club's 20 year history, MACAW has supported and given generously money raised during MACAW events like bird fairs and seminars to many avian causes and needs.
So, the next time you are looking for a new addition to your family and you are considering a bird, please consider adoption! Pet birds can live on average 10 to 50 years and most adoptable birds are under 5 years of age.
Thank you.
