Madison Gem and Mineral Club Annual Picnic Aug 23, 2009
About 20 people, including three guests, gathered on a beautiful afternoon at the Blue Mound State Park shelter for the annual club picnic. The usual variety of good food was eagerly consumed by everyone. Afterward, in the president's absence, vice-president Steve Harsy made some an-nouncements. First, a nominating committee for club officers is being formed. It will be composed of Steve, Scot Moss, and one other person. Anyone wishing to serve on the committee or as an officer, specifically as president, is urged to step forward. Second, in a correction to information in the Agateer, there will be a field trip to the Utley quarry on Sept 26. Details will follow in the Sept Agateer and meeting. Finally, Carlos and Gabriela announced that she will be conducting her young geologist program at her home on Sept 6 at 1pm. Any young people wishing to attend are encouraged to contact her. Bob Thornton introduced Al Swain, the park naturalist, who gave us a talk on the geology and history of the park. We learned many interesting facts and stories about caves, airplane crashes, race tracks, and more. Thank you, Al. After the talk, many people participated in the rock swap. Several members had brought a variety of rock and lapidary material to trade or sell. Many transactions took place, and a good time was had by all. |
