Club Shop Update

Lapidary Shop News November 2009
10/22/2009
Al Vonderohe, Karl Bethke, Jack Heabler and Karl Jensen

Club Lapidary Shop Update at the Wet Arts Room, Goodman Community Center.

Update November 2009:

Open shop times for the remainder of the year are Thursday, 11a - 3 p, and 5:15p - 9:15p, and Saturday 1-5 in December. The shop will be closed Nov 21 (annual show), Nov 26 (Thanksgiving), Dec 24, Dec 26, Dec 31, and Jan 2, 2010 (for holidays.)

The shop is open to the public, and we ask that people be certified to use the facility. People can be certified via a four hour 'crash course' available during any open shop session for $30. Contact Jack Heabler for details at 712-2697 or MGMC Sales

The Club is looking into having a lapidary course with Memorial Union (UW) mini-courses. The first mini-course will likely be Feb 3 - Mar 10 2010.

The Board has appointed chairpeople for various areas of the Shop. They are: Andy VandenAvond - Shop Manager, Scheduling & Courses - Jack Heabler, Facilities - Bob Thornton, Policies - Richard Zimmerman, Financials - Gerry Gunderson.

Shop Usage policy:

Anyone, Club member or non-member, can use the shop.

Shop supervisors may use the facility at no cost during periods they are supervising. Any member, certified to use the shop, is eligible to be a supervisor.

Supervisor signup

We have a web-based system, using Google Calendar, for managing supervisor signups:

Al's Notes:

------------------------------------

1) If you do not have a gmail address, please use your web browser to go to www.gmail.com and go through the few short steps needed to obtain one, then let me (Al) know what it is.

2) After signing in to gmail, to access the shared calendar from the gmail homepage, click "Calendar" on the bar at the top of the page. This will bring up a separate window with a calendar in it. On the left side, under "Other Calendars" click on "Add a friend's calendar" and type in my gmail address which is alan.vonderohe@gmail.com. You should now be able to access the shared calendar merely by selecting it under "Other Calendars".

NOTE: You will not be able to do this until I have entered your gmail address in the permissions that I control for the calendar.

3) The calendar has been filled through July 2009 with slots for open shop times and for our introductory course. The open shop time slots show the supervisor. If there is a "???" indicated for the supervisor, then no one has signed up to supervise that slot.

4) To sign up to supervise a slot with "???" in it, merely double click on the slot. You will see a screen with "WHAT Open Shop / Supervisor ???" in the green background area. Merely replace the ??? with your name and click the "SAVE" button just above the green area. You will be sent back to the calendar page that should now show you as signed up for that time slot. Repeat for as many slots that you want to supervise. Don't forget to log out when you are finished.

You can access the calendar at any time to see what you have signed up for or to sign up for more slots. Once you have signed up, please do not "un-signup", meaning don't go back and replace your name with "???"....that will lead to unending confusion. So, please make sure that when you sign up for a time slot you can surely supervise that time slot.

I will be monitoring the calendar from time to time to see how things stand and so will Karl J. so that he can post notices on open shop times and supervisors on the club web site for all to see.

If you have any problems accessing the calendar or signing up, let me know. Please also let me know the first time you have signed up for time slot and it works.

Thank you all for all your help and your continuing commitment to the Club.

Alan V.
