The United Seniors lost in their league semi-final game against Madison Fire on Sunday. United, playing with no substitutes, held a strong defensive first half with few offensive chances for either side, but a cross late in the first half found a Fire player on the far side of the box who put his header to the far post over the United goalkeeper's reach. United changed up the formation in the second half to put another striker in the mix and found more opportunities than in the first half. The Fire, however, made a counter-attack pass (which was believed to easily be offside by the United defense) that left a player one-on-one with the United keeper and scored at the near post for a 2-0 lead. United finally found a wave of hope when Kevin Jonas put in a strike from 25 yards out that beat the keeper to make it a 1-2 game with about 4 minutes left. United couldn't equalize before time expired and the game ended 1-2, Fire. Earlier in the day, the United Juniors also went down by a score of 2-1 against Madison Eagles in the second division semi-final game. Hopefully a game report will follow soon. The Madison United U23 team is 1-0-1 and sitting in second place in their summer league. Hopefully a game report will also follow soon. The United Over 30 Summer league started this week and United and Mad City met for the first game of the season. It was a close match with some opportunities made and missed by both teams. Hamed Zafari was in the nets and had some key saves to keep the tie. Mad City did finish their opportunities and the result was a 2-2 tie. Here's a fun link to a short video by John Cleese on Football V's Soccer... Next Friday, June 26th, United will be serving food at the Capital Brewery in Middleton from 4pm til ??? This will be a fund raising event for the Club. We are looking for volunteers for the time there to cook and serve burgers & brats etc. Anyone wishing to donate a pack of brats/burgers/hotdogs etc. would be appreciated. (You spend $3 and the club makes $30... see how that works!) We are also interested in anyone who might bake cookies etc. If you can help in any way... contact Mike Hoeser at 212-2169. There is a great band on that evening, so come on out! Remember... United We Stand! Question... How was the USA V's Honduras game? (Here's a clue... :)
Before the game, the United contingent headed over to the Elephant & Castle for a couple of pints of IPA and Guinness. Our group consisted of Shannon Riley, Amy U'Ren, Shereen Vakili, Chris Rumbelow & Tim Johnson. (Mike Hoeser must have been in the little boys room!)
After going down 1-0 to an early Honduras goal,Landon Donovan netted this PK... what a great photo, taken on Mike's cell phone! Then the celebrations began...
Two rows in front of us were United alumni Landon Wiet and Mike Riordan... great game eh boys!!! Last Tuesday, the United O40 men's team battled bravely against an Internationals team stacked with soccer mercenaries from all over Madison, only to succumb at the death to a corker from Enzo Fuschino. United outplayed and out possessed Internationals for most of the game and were unlucky not to go ahead on two occasions late in the game when Dante Viscarra sent George Oliveira through. His first attempt glanced off the post and his second attempt, was saved by the Internationals keeper. Keeper Joe Banks kept United in the game, but could only watch as Fuschino's last-minute strike from 25 yards found the top corner. |
