United Over 40's roll over the Corinthians...

8/29/2009

This game report is bought to you by United stopper, Tom Keepers.

The United 040 delivered a smashing victory over the Corinthian side on a cool, breezy August evening. For a change, the United side relied in its offensive power (vs. the defense) to score. Six minutes into the game, United built up through the midfield and down the left wing when Shannon Riley beat yet another defender with his lightning speed and sent a cross to the near post where Mike Hoeser deftly put it into the net on his second thrash at the ball.

The defense continued to hold the Corinthians for another 54 minutes until Riley sent a lovely cross over to a very open Abe and he finished the job for United's second goal of the evening. Soon after, at minute 68, Chuck Angevine recovered from his corner kick struggles to place a pass in Hoeser hands (ok, feet, really), and he turned it into his second goal of the night.

United kept pouring on the pressure and only 7 minutes later at the 75th minute, Dante Viscarra started down the pitch with "GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAL!!!!!" on his dance-enabling brain. Feint after feint -- including NOT passing to Chris Rumbelow -- found Dante at heaven's gate inside the box where he dance-kinged a goal into the net.

Rumbelow would not be outdone. With an assist from Abe, he recovered from Dante's lack of service and answered with a miraculous 180 swiveling volley that caught the eastern winds of England to banana into the back of the net. While teammates were incredulous, Rumbelow was more so, especially after opening his eyes to see the result!

The game summary would be remiss without kudos to Tio in goal, aided by his strong defensive core, earning a shutout.

Final score: United 6, Corinthians 0.

"Well played this evening, gents! "

The sun was shining and the faces of the United CoEd team were squinting with pain and horror…we were about to embark on our first 9am coed soccer game with no known post-beer celebration planned. As the kick-off whistle blew 20 minutes late, the game started off like a video game. Both teams were a bit sluggish running off the remains of last-nights debacles, but eventually we got into a nice, smooth groove. Great passes and connections were made on both teams and it became obvious that no matter the score, this would be one great game. Caleb Dickenson scored the first goal and led us off to an optimistic start. A second goal came from a perfect pass by Tony Breitbach to the 12-yard line where Molly Johannessen just toe-touched it past the goalie to put United up 2-0. At the end of the first half, we went in upbeat at 2-1.

The second half momentum lacked a bit when our shape through the middle became very flat. Having lost a few of our marks, the other team went up 4-2. However, our heart never vanished, and we never gave up, squeaking in one more goal from Brandon Byrd who fought for the ball on the 6-yard line to poke it past all defenders. In the end, Guillermo came through with a case of Miller Lite to celebrate a great battle between two skilled teams.

Final Score: United CoEd 3 Dribbling Idiots 4

This week, United O40 team again rolled over their opponents. At the 7 minute mark of the game United pressed hard in front of the opponent goal. A goal mouth scramble ensued and resulted in a goal by Mario Cano assisted by Chuck Angevine. At the 22 minute mark Duncan Cairns gained possession on the left side of the field. He passed square to Abdi Omar who slipped a nice pass through the defense to Chuck Angevine who rounded the keeper and smashed it to the back of the open net. At the 47 minute mark, Angevine made a nice pass through to Abe Jawara in the middle of the box. Abe received it with his right foot and played directly to his left for a quick shot, far post and the back of the net. At the 61st minute mark a through ball was played to Dante Viscarra who had beaten the offside trap. He went on to attack the keeper who got a hand on the ball but it wasn't enough to keep the ball from crossing the line. At the 65th minute mark Edwin Benitez sent a ball through the defensive line to Viscarra who got off a low shot that beat the keeper for United's fifth and final goal.

Final Score: United Over 40's 5 Draft House 0
