Notes about Recertification...

Once Master Gardener Volunteer (MGV) Interns are certified, they need to serve at least 24 volunteer hours to be recertified each year, performed between September 1 to August 31.

The opportunites indicated with a "- 4 -" below count toward the 4 hour volunteer requirement to Dane County UW-Extension.

zCity of Madison Parks
Created in 1983, the People for Parks program encourages citizens to take an active role in the maintenance and enhancement of our parks. Donated funds for specific projects are matched, allowing increased flexibility. Contributions of parkland, benches and trees have enhanced our parks. Stewardship efforts are visible through Earth Day clean ups, tree mulching, hiking trail repair, planting and weeding gardens, prairie seed collecting and assistance at special events. These activities involve individuals, community organizations, businesses, school groups and neighborhood associations throughout the community.

For more information on how you can volunteer in Madison's parks, call the Parks Community Relations Coordinator at (608) 266-5949.

Click on the link to the City of Madison Parks website for a list of the current volunteer opportunities.

zGoodman Pool
Contact Taylar Foster, (608) 266-4711.

Goodman Pool is located at 325 E Olin Ave behind the Alliant Energy Center.

Gardening volunteers will be responsible for general weeding in perennial and shrub beds, picking up trash in planting beds, pruning and re-mulching shrubs and trees and general upkeep of planting beds. Volunteers will work independently on an as-needed basis when you are available.

All volunteers will be fully trained before starting work. Training is held regularly. Volunteers will be given a T-shirt to wear when gardening, gloves, tools and a safety vest.

Volunteers must fill out an application and pass a background check. The only requirements are that you are dependable, friendly, 16 years of age or older, and able to work in sun and in a chaotic environment!

zIce Age Trail
Add benefits to the natural landscape with habitat restoration projects. Many times and sites to take your pick against invasive species removal before native seed planting. Tools of use are loppers, bowsaws, weed wrenches and pick mattocks. Lightweight pulling of garlic mustard. Children 8+ allowed. Call Don Ferber, Volunteer Coordinator, (608) 222-9376.

In 2007, the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens delivered 98,000 pounds of fresh vegetables to the Community Action Coalition and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southern Wisconsin for distribution to the 44 food pantries and meal sites in Southern Wisconsin.

There are three gardens located in Fitchburg and west Madison. Volunteers help plant, weed, hoe, till and harvest. Work days are scheduled in the evening for the benefit of those who work during the day, but would like some evening exercise.

Their web site is www.foodpantrygardens.org. Refer to the section Locations for the work sites and the section This Week for the up-to-date schedule.

Contact Emmett Schulte at schulte@wisc.edu or (608) 233-4829, or Ken Witte at (608) 233-1417.
