What is a List-Serv?

It's a private email system that allows you to subscribe (and unsubscribe) to a group email notification system.

What is the Dane-mg-list?

This List-Serv is for Dane County MGVs and those interested in the horticultural needs and related topics of Dane County residents.

How do I join?

To join the List-Serv, visit this site and enter your e-mail address, following the simple directions.

If you only have a work email address, you might consider a 'freebie' email account from providers such as Google (gmail), Yahoo! or MSN (Hotmail). Just remember to check back to your box on a routine basis.

How do I receive messages?

There are two ways to receive messages:

• Single emails as they are sent, or
• A group of daily messages in one Digest email

After you sign up, you begin sending emails to dane-mg-list@lists.uwex.edu. This will send your email to all other Dane-mg-list subscribers.

How do I reply to an email?

• Reply to the individual's own email address (shown in 'From') for a private conversation, or
• Reply to the List-Serv for a mass discussion

It is used as an MGV notification system AND as a Forum for MGVs. Examples:

1) When MAMGA Organizers or Dane County Extension Horticulture Educators want to notify the masses, this is the system they use.

2) Ways YOU can use the List-Serv as a forum:

• Trade plants and seeds
• Offer items to recycle or ask for items
• Share tips and horticulture news - or verify what you've heard
• Ask Questions
• Offer/Get rides to programs/tours
• Share volunteer opportunities around the area
• Share other events with us

• Don't put any personal info in the email. No phone numbers, no discussion as to when you'll be on vacation. Share that info in a private email with known list subscribers.
• Don't try to sell items for personal gain, including your own services.
• Don't send chain emails or jokes.
• Don't send info that doesn't have horticulture value.
• Don't send photos or attachments, as they'll be 'scrubbed' by the UWEX MailMan.

You can make adjustments via email by sending a message to: Dane-mg-list-request@lists.uwex.edu with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the quotes), and someone from the Mailman system will get back with a message with instructions.

A Password?

You must know your password to change your mailing options (including changing the password, itself) or to unsubscribe. You may enter a privacy password when you sign up. This provides only mild security, but should prevent others from messing with your subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you as text anyone can read.

If you choose not to enter a password, one will be automatically generated for you, and it will be sent to you once you've confirmed your subscription.

How do I unsubscribe?

To unsubscribe from Dane-mg-list, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address at the same site where you originally signed up.

Normally, Mailman will automatically remind you of your lists.uwex.edu mailing list password once every month, although you can disable this if you prefer. This reminder will also include instructions on how to unsubscribe or change your account options. There is also a button on your options page that will email your current password to you.

A reminder: If you stop using an email address, doing so won't automatically cancel your list-serv subscription. Please unsubscribe the old address at the same time you re-subscribe with your new email address. Thanks!
