We would like to congratulate volunteer tutor, Shirley Austin, for completing all the requirements towards receiving Orton-Gillingham certification, including 100 hours of supervised tutoring. Shirley is a full-time teacher at Edgewood Campus School. She has volunteered at the center for two years.
On Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, Erv Carpenter spoke at a Zor Shrine dinner on behalf of the Madison Masonic Learning Center. On Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, Sara Pace spoke on behalf of the Learning Center at the West Side Club for a Madison Rotary Club Lunch.
On Oct. 17 & 18, 2003, Erv Carpenter taught the first of a three-part course through the Continuing Education Department of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. The course is entitled, An Introduction to the Orton-Gillingham Approach to Teaching Dyslexic/Learning Disabled Children. The second and third part of the course will include Methods and hands-on teaching. The next introductory course will be on January 23 & 24, 2004, and will be taught at the Madison Masonic Center. This will help us to reach more teachers in the Madison School District.
