Supporting families with children from Guatemala

Milagros de Guatemala is a community of adoptive families who have children who were born in Guatemala. We all have different experiences with the adoption process, and we gather to share these experiences with each other. We also want to provide cultural activities that reflect our families’ heritage, and we want our children to get to know others who have backgrounds like theirs.

We recognize that the adoption process is a difficult one, and that support given and received along the way is a blessing. We also recognize that the adoption is only the beginning of a new experience for our families, and we work to support each other on our journeys.

Milagros de Guatemala is an ever-evolving group. Our principle objectives include providing:

• A place for prospective adoptive parents to ask questions about Guatemalan adoptions, including questions about selecting agencies, paperwork requirements, traveling, and the legal processes in Guatemala and Wisconsin.

• A network in which children adopted from Guatemala can get to know other Guatemala-born children, and where families can see examples of other families formed in similar ways.

• A place where our children can get a taste of and an appreciation for Guatemalan culture.

• A resource for adoptive parents where issues related to parenting, adoption, and multi-cultural families are discussed.

• A social organization sponsoring family-centered activities such as playgroups and potlucks, as well as cultural activities to celebrate our ties to the Guatemalan and Latino communities. It also offers periodic adult-only activities such as salsa dancing or dinners out.
