Preserving McFarland's History
|
The McFarland Historical Society had its start in 1963 when a group of parents gathered an exhibit of artifacts to display at the grade school for the fall festival. Interest in local history was generated and members of the group began the research that resulted in a charter from the State Historical Society on April 18, 1964. The Society has been preserving, advancing and collecting the history of McFarland ever since.
Mr. And Mr. Albert Skare had maintained a private museum in a log cabin at their Hidden Valley Farm on Elvehjem Road. In 1969 their niece, Margaret Green Kennedy donated this collection to the Historical Society. Mrs. Kennedy also donated funds in memory of the Skares and when the McFarland State Bank donated a lot on Main Street, in 1971, the museum was built.
