Petition for Enabling Legislation to Confront Global Warming and Address
Climate Change in Wisconsin
Submitted by Michael Neuman, Madison, to Senator Fred Risser and
Representative Therese Berceau, February 16, 2005, as part of
“Environmental Lobby Day”.
Message:
Wisconsin citizens count on their government to protect their economic
well-being, health and the environment that surrounds them. Global
warming, and the changes that are now already occurring in Wisconsin’s
climate as a result of global warming, severely threaten all three of
these.
Wisconsin’s winter tourism industry has suffered economic losses over the
last several years as warmer fall temperatures last longer into the
winter and warmer springtime melts come earlier. The period of snow
cover for winter activities has diminished and
the time to do these things has gotten shorter and shorter.
Air quality health advisories have become more common in Wisconsin
recently. Within the last six months the Department of Natural Resources
has had 1 ozone alert and 2 air health advisories for Madison, including
one air health advisory that was issued statewide and lasted almost a
week. People with asthma and heart disease as well all children were
advised to restrict
their levels of outdoor physical activities to prevent adverse lung and
heart functions. Global warming contributes to the likelihood that more
such air health advisories will need to be issued in Wisconsin. [Snip]
