Important upcoming dates:
Please join us for these! Rain dates for the Saturday workdays will be Sunday, same time. If you are uncertain about the weather, check back here. The dedication will happen rain or shine, but we will move it indoors if it's raining. The late Jessica Bullen, former treasurer of Quann Community Garden, was a biking, gardening and community activist in the Madison area. She had recently finished her graduate work in the Urban and Regional Planning Department at UW-Madison, and received the Outstanding Student of the Year award. The garden will be in the triangle of land across the gravel road from the community gardens. In 2006, there were two design charrettes led by Sam Dennis, professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at UW-Madison.
The plan includes a council ring made of stone, fruit trees, and a rain garden. In 2007
In 2008 We will raise money for the following items:
We would love to build the low stone wall that was in the original design! If we get enough donations, we will! If you are coming from out of town for the dedication, and you would like housing please contact Jim Winkle for details. There are still four of us with room for guests. To donate money to this project, please make a check payable to CAC - Community Gardens with Jess Bullen Memorial written in the memo area. All gifts made through the Community Action Coalition are tax-deductible. Mail it to Community Action Coalition: CAC c/o Janet Parker1717 North Stoughton Road Madison, WI 53704-2605 Please provide your contact information (including email address) so that we can thank you, include you in any communication about the project, and invite you to the Work Day and Dedication Day. Although we prefer to have donations mailed to CAC they can also be made online. (Note: 3% of the online donation goes to online processing fees.) Make sure to designate your donation to Jess Bullen Memorial. Thanks to all those who came to the pancake breakfast fundraiser; it was a huge success! Download a brochure about the memorial garden. To volunteer as an orchard steward (training provided, commitment of 1 year required, no need to be a member of Quann garden), contact Jim Winkle. This may take the form of adopting a tree or two.
Jess was an avid bicyclist. At the garden and at executive committee meetings, she was rarely seen without her bike and helmet close by. In participation with the People for Parks program, Quann Garden purchased and installed a bike rack at the garden in 2006 to serve the needs of those who bike to the garden. The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin also has a memorial fund for Jess, which is used for a motorist education program. Here is more information about it. This page will be updated occasionally through spring, 2008; contact Jim Winkle if you'd like to be notified of major updates. |
