The Story of Lucky

One morning so early,
A loud noise we did hear,
We jumped out of bed and ran outside,
And saw two little puppies, so dear.

We kept you, a big bundle of white fur,
A mixture of Shepherd and Golden Lab, too;
Our love for you grew as each passing day,
We spent watching the crazy things you do.

We named you "Lucky,"
Because indeed you really are,
With a loving good home and family;
You live like a movie star.

Almost every night at dusk,
Outside we would go,
To exercise and run and play,
While the Frisbee I would throw.

You running like the wind,
Tipper at your heels,
Never quite catching up,
To see how that old Frisbee feels.

When Tipper passed away,
As all doggies do,
With broken hearts and love to give,
We gave it all to you.

As years go by, you continue to grow,
With all your loving care;
You've gotten so nice and cuddly;
We call you "Teddy Bear."

You love the winter,
You eat the snow,
You roll and tumble,
And really go.

You chase our cat and kill our bees;
Sometimes it's just a fright;
We scold you – then we hug you;
So everything works out alright.

Then Penny came along one day,
As cute as any dog could be;
You really didn't want to share your home;
And give up your liberty.

But, as time passed,
A real playmate she became;
First she fought you, then, she loved you,
And accepted all your little games.

Now you're getting older,
Your age is beginning to show;
With bladder problems and pills to take,
Things start to move quite slow.

You were my faithful friend and companion,
For that was surely true;
You followed me wherever I went;
No way will I ever forget you.

So farewell, my buddy,
My dear friend so true;
Your memory will linger always;
I thank God for you.

Lucky was put to sleep on April 6, 1992
in Columbus at age 13 years.
