Consequences of Malnutrition

Malnutrition can cause impairment in both cognitive and physical development. The impacts can be profound and permanent. Children's physical growth and brain development can be permanently impaired, and the emotional impacts can be devastating.

Adults struggle with physical effects, but the emotional effects are strong. Many are alternately grateful and frustrated, depressed or humiliated when they "go public" with their need by accepting food from a pantry or meal site.

There is pride and dignity associated with self-sufficiency, and most of those in need would chose self-sufficiency if they could.
