The majority of those who are hungry in this part of Wisconsin are working at jobs that do not pay enough to make ends meet the working poor. They spend about $1 in $5 of their income on home energy costs every year, where a median-income family household would spend only $1 in $20. A fulltime minimum-wage worker cannot afford to pay the fair market rent for a two-bedroom unit anywhere in America. When money is short, many choose hunger over being homeless or without utilities. They may reduce the size of meals, skip meals, or eat available foods, without regard to nutrition, just to ease the feel of hunger. The situation worsens for families with children when summer arrives and their children are no longer receiving nutritious meals at school. |
