Welcome to the Sertoma Club of Madison's Community Pages

05/07/2008

Sertoma is derived from the words SERvice TO MAnkind. Sertoma exists for the high and noble purpose of SERvice TO MAnkind by communication of thoughts, ideas, and concepts to accelerate human progress in health, education, freedom and democracy. Sertoma's motto is "Making Life Worthwile."

The Sertoma Club of Madison has been serving the needs of the Madison community since 1952.

Madison Sertoma members are committed to providing assistance to people with speech and hearing impairments as well as providing support to community programs for disadvantaged youth.

The Sertoma Club of Madison has a rich history of community service. In the early 1960s club members constructed a chapel at the Oakhill Correctional Institute. Since 1989 members have annually painted a house for the Dane County Paint-a-thon. For many years club members assisted with free hearing screenings at Wisconsin's Farm Progress Days. From 1990 to the present, Sertoma has raised funds for the following major projects: $10,000 for WHA TV Closed Captioning Initiative; $18,000 for infant hearing screening pilot programs at Meriter Hospital; $8,000 infant hearing screenings of at-home births; $5,000+ to food pantry operations in Dane County; $5,000 to support the City of Madison's 'Fire Cam Fund.'

The club has provided financial support for the Atwood Community Center (most recently renamed the Goodman Atwood Community Center) since 1990. The club purchased commercial kitchen equipment for the center to make meals for the elderly, painted a community room and annually donates to the center's food pantry. Club members are currently assisting the Goodman Atwood Center in a mentoring program at Lowell Elementary School.

National heritage is important to Sertomans. Club members hand out copies of the Declaration of Independence to new citizens at naturalization ceremonies held at the Federal Courthouse in Madison.

The club meets on Thursdays for lunch from September to early June. Please navigate to additional articles for more information about our club activites.
