Sammy Devenny was the first civilian victim of the Troubles in Northern Ireland when he was beaten in his home in Derry by members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1969. His family and friends recently gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of the incident.

Tourism in Ireland suffered an 18.5% decline in 2009.

The year of 2010 marks the 50th year since the founding of Shamrock Clubs of Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Chapter is planning various activities in celebration.

On December 21, 1948, Ireland passed an act declaring itself a Republic.

Thousands of Irish and German immigrants who came to America in the 19th century looking for a new and better life ended up being quarantined on Staten Island because of severe illness. Many died there and were buried in mass graves with few records being kept.

The New York Stock Exchange announced plans to open an operational center in Belfast that will create 400 new jobs.

The 1911 Ireland census has been released by the National Library in a free searchable online database. The database includes all 32 counties.

The former home of director John Huston is for sale for $5.5 million. It is known as St. Cleran's Manor House and is located in Craughwell, County Galway. It was built in 1784 by the Burke clan.

"Finian's Rainbow" is back for another run on Broadway.

U.S. Airways has ended flights to Shannon airport in the west of Ireland.

Googlehas confirmed that it plans to expand its Ireland operations in Dublin.

Cork City has been named one of the top ten cities to see in the world. Charleston, S.C. and Vancouver, British Columbia are also on the list.

Researchers at Trinity College are part of a team of researchers from other universities which has discovered a drug that can kill leukemia cells while doing no harm to normal blood cells.

The Irish police carried out raids in North Dublin on November 2 where they seized over 7,000 Samurai swords. Samurai swords are illegal in Ireland.

There is fear that IRA dissidents are planning a major atrocity in an attempt to sabotage the Northern Ireland peace accord. The commission says that twenty people have been injured in shootings aimed at dissuading cooperation from Catholics as the dissidents become more desperate as the peace process moves forward.
