SHARYL J. KATO, Director and Child and Family Therapist with the Rainbow Project Child and Family Counseling and Resource Clinic. Phone: 255-7356. Email: skato@therainbowproject.net.

THE IMPACT OF TRAUMA ON YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES:

The Rainbow Project has provided comprehensive prevention, early intervention and treatment services in the community for nearly 30 years, serving nearly 6,000 children and 5,000 adults. Sharyl speaks on a wide range of topics related to the impact of trauma on young children and families, including child abuse, neglect, domestic violence, child sexual abuse, community violence, natural disasters, grief/loss. Rainbow services are unique and comprehensive serving as a model for other communities on a state, national and international level.

Rainbow services are intended to promote positive change and mental health within families including building, strengthening and supporting healthy parent-child relationships and advocating for the mental health needs of families and children in the community. Sharyl effectively describes ways we can all be a part of the solution in dealing with the many effects that can occur from untreated trauma. How can we identify problems early on for children, help them heal and prevent more serious problems from occurring in the future?

Sharyl also describes effective early intervention consultation services provided onsite in schools and early childhood programs and ways the community has developed networking and partnerships with other community agencies to coordinate community efforts: Task Forces on Domestic Violence and Child Abuse as well as the Children and Youth Mental Health Consortium. Sharyl and other Rainbow clinicians provide in-service training and workshop presentations on a local, state, national and international level. Sharyl Kato is a clinical faculty member with the UW Medical School Dept. of Psychiatry and a member of Downtown Rotary and TEMPO.
